If anyone is planning to invest in gold, then this is not the right time. For purchasing jewelry in small amounts, it is not a big concern. But for investment purposes, one should wait for some time until the gold price settles to its actual value in 2025.

Real Cost of Buying Gold in Pakistan [ Ratti Masha Kat Explained ]
Gold is measured in grams, ounces, kilograms, or tolas. The most common method of measuring gold nationally in Pakistan is in tolas. Other smaller divisions include ratti and masha.
Ratti is the smallest division, where 1 ratti is equal to the weight of 8 rice grains of average-sized (approximately 0.1213 grams). Masha comes next, equal to 8 ratti. The largest traditional unit in use for centuries is the tola, which is equal to 12 masha.

In Pakistan, there are two types of gold trade. The first is the buying and selling of gold bars or biscuits, where there is no labor cost, hidden charges, or any kind of ‘kat.’ The second is the buying and selling of gold jewelry, where both hidden charges and ‘kat’ are included.
These hidden charges and ‘kat’ make gold a very expensive item. The customer is charged for both labor cost and heavy ‘kat.’ Together, these factors make the gold price in Pakistan unaffordable for middle-class people.
The additional costs, other than the gold rate in Pakistan, when selling gold to a customer include labor cost, polish cost, and exterior metal (usually copper). All of these, except the labor cost, are added in terms of ratti to masha in weight. This means the buyer ends up paying the price of polish and copper at the gold rate in Pakistan
All the hidden charges, in buying, are calculated in the two smallest divisions, which are ratti and masha. This is termed as ‘Ratti Masha Kat.’ In simple words, gold is divided into these smaller units like mashas, and the ‘kat’ refers to the adjustment that is borne by the customer in selling.
When a customer sells 5 tolas gold in Pakistan. In mashas, this equals 60 masha, and per masha the minimum ‘kat’ is 1 ratti. So upon calculation, the ‘kat’ becomes 60 ratti, which equals 7.5 masha. In tolas, this is approximately 0.625 tola. This means when you sell 5 tolas, you will actually receive payment for only 4.375 tolas — if there is no polish or pearls used in the jewelry.
Now, if the jewelry has polish and also contains pearls, the seller is in an even worse condition. The pearls are detached from the jewelry, and the polish is adjusted with an additional ‘kat’ ranging from 1 ratti to 1 masha. This further reduces the weight to another 0.6 tola.
Gold and Silver Purity in Pakistan – Karat, Percentage & Details
The purity of gold is labeled in karats. Gold in its purest form is called 24K or 24 karat gold. However, pure gold (24K) is not suitable for making jewelry, as it is very soft. To make it usable for jewelry, a small amount of silver or, more commonly, copper is mixed with pure gold.
The amount of these added metals (silver or copper) determines the karat value. A higher amount of impurity (silver or copper) lowers the karat, such as in 18K gold, while fewer impurities result in higher karats, like 22K gold.
Gold purity is measured in karats (K). The purest form is 24K Gold (Gold 999), which is 99.99% pure. In Pakistan, jewelry is often made in 22K (Gold 916 – 91.67% pure) or 21K (Gold 875 – 87.5% pure), as they are more durable than 24K. Lower karats like 18K (Gold 750) or 14K (Gold 583) are also common for everyday jewelry.
Silver is also available in different purities. Fine Silver (Silver 999) is 99.99% pure, while the most popular type, Sterling Silver (Silver 925), is 92.5% pure. Other types include Silver Coin (90% purity) and German Silver (80% purity).
| Karat / Type | International Marking | Purity % |
|---|---|---|
| 24K Gold | Gold 999 | 99.99% |
| 22K Gold | Gold 916 | 91.67% |
| 21K Gold | Gold 875 | 87.50% |
| 20K Gold | Gold 833 | 83.33% |
| 18K Gold | Gold 750 | 75.00% |
| 16K Gold | Gold 667 | 66.67% |
